Code of Ethics

Learn what professional accountability means in practice and how the independent ICF review process safeguards the profession.

The Foundation of Professional Coaching

The ICF Code of Ethics defines the professional and ethical standards that guide every member and credential-holder of the International Coaching Federation. It establishes clear boundaries between acceptable and unacceptable professional conduct and provides a shared global framework for integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and responsibility.

The official and legally binding version of the Code is published and maintained by ICF Global.

Expectations of ICF Coaches

Every ICF member and credential-holder pledges to uphold the Code of Ethics.

In practice, this means that ICF coaches:

  • Act ethically and responsibly in all professional interactions
  • Pursue continuous professional growth and self-awareness
  • Take accountability for their professional decisions and actions
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality
  • Practice in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Value diversity, inclusion, and respectful engagement

Ethical commitment is demonstrated in daily professional behavior.

To better understand how the Code is applied in practice, ICF Global provides a seven-part video series explaining each section of the Code.

When Ethical Concerns Arise

Ethical accountability is essential to maintaining professional standards. If an ICF member or credential-holder is believed to have violated the Code of Ethics, concerns can be submitted through the independent review process managed by ICF Global.

This process:

  • Is impartial and structured
  • Follows due process
  • Applies consistently worldwide
  • Ensures fairness and transparency

ICF Netherlands does not adjudicate ethical complaints. All formal complaints are handled through the global independent review system.
